Author’s note: Like the Social Principles, this blog is meant to be a starting point for conversation. I invite you to read and listen with an open mind to how the Holy Spirit may be speaking through me, and I will also seek to listen for the Holy Spirit in your respectful response.
Yesterday, I preached at First UMC Pittsburgh. I was invited to share a biblical and theological reflection on the major actions of this recent General Conference. In short, I believe the actions of the 3 Rs–regionalize, remove, revise–all move our denomination closer to living out a belief in the sacred dignity and worth of all persons. We have affirmed since 1972 that all persons are individuals of sacred worth, but have not always practiced what we preached. These major actions are a step toward holding our beloved church more accountable to our theology and heritage. And that work will continue, because the actions of General Conference didn’t automatically fix everything (they never do!).
My sermon begins at 48:39 and runs about 22 minutes. And if you have extra time, watch Pastor Tracy’s welcome at the beginning of worship. She added in some of her own prophetic preaching!
